General information on emergency power supply: When it comes to emergency power supply, a fundamental distinction is made between “uninterruptible power supplies” (UPS) and “emergency power systems” (EPS).
Uninterruptible power supplies draw their energy from batteries and are used to protect highly sensitive technical systems such as mainframe computers, servers, and telephone systems. They ensure uninterrupted operation in the event of a failure of the public power supply.
UPS systems are generally only designed for a short bridging period. During this time, technical systems can be returned to a safe operating state, or an emergency power supply system can take over the power supply.
Emergency power systems usually consist of generators,
which are powered by diesel engines. They are used to supply the property’s power grid/emergency power grid. The transfer to the grid supply is not uninterrupted; in the best case scenario, the start-up time of the emergency power supply is in the range of seconds. The operating time of the emergency power supply is highly dependent on an uninterrupted supply of high-quality fuel.
